9 Surprising Foods To Pair With Chocolate

Can’t decide on the food you want to serve at your party?

Chocolate is always a good starting place, but what should go with it?

You can mimic the techniques of gourmet chefs to make even very simple party food memorable. The main goal is to pair foods that bring a variety of flavors and consistencies together so that the individual foods enhance each other. Consider foods with a flavor that is nearly as strong or a little stronger than the chocolate. You don’t want either food to overpower the other. Salty, tart, and spicy foods compliment chocolate well. Also, think of foods that can be described as crunchy or crispy.

These 9 Surprising Foods Compliment Chocolate

#1. Herbs and Spices

Cinnamon, ginger, and rosemary enhance the flavor of chocolate in unique ways. Flavor chocolate with ground spices, serve other foods seasoned with herbs, or offer whole items such as cinnamon sticks, depending on the type of chocolate being served. It could be fun to serve chocolate candies flavored with or paired with each spice so people can try them out and see which they like best.

#2. Cheese

The love affair between chocolate and cheese seems to be really hitting it off, according to gourmet specialists on the internet. I haven’t personally tried it yet, but I think I need to. Cheeses are tart and have a distinctive taste, so this would pair well with chocolate.

Want a real shock? If you had asked me which cheese would pair worst with chocolate, I would probably have guessed parmesan cheese, but people are raving about it.

Again, this would be a great opportunity to lay out a chocolate and cheese bar and let people try out their own combinations. This way guests receive food, fun, and new experiences.

#3. Potato Chips

Most of us have probably stumbled upon this delight on our own because so many parties include chocolate cake and potato chips. These salty, crunchy and oh-so-lovable snacks make a delicious and fun food to serve with chocolate in all forms. Chocolate fountains, candies, cakes, and ice cream benefit from the taste and shape of potato chips.

#4. Peppers

Yes, hot peppers will dazzle partygoers. The strong, spicy flavor of the peppers enhances the smooth, sweetness of chocolate. This taste sensation is particularly powerful because your tongue gets a little numb from the peppers and leaves typically unnoticed taste buds ready to fully appreciate the chocolate.

#5. Salt

It seems to be easy for our mouths to enjoy salty and sweet things at the same time. You actually taste both of the items more.

Did you know that you can put salt in or on chocolate?

#6. Popcorn

Drizzle chocolate on popcorn or serve them next to each other, and your guests will be delighted. This could be another great food bar opportunity. It would be amazing to serve several types of popcorn, different kinds of chocolate, and toppings of diverse candy and nuts.

#7. Vegetables

This is another one I haven’t tried, but apparently people have been pairing vegetables and chocolate together. You can dip vegetables in a chocolate fountain, serve vegetables covered in chocolate, and pair chocolate and vegetables together in a snack plate.

#8. Bread

Chocolate tastes delicious with sweet and savory breads. Vegetable based breads such as zucchini, cheesy breads, and nutty breads taste great served with and dipped in chocolate. Also, chocolate spreads make great party sandwiches.

#9. Mushrooms

Save this one for a party with very adventurous guests. Apparently, mushrooms and chocolate are something we are all missing out on, but you wouldn’t want to force the pairing on someone. Cook them together, serve them together, maybe even dip it.

Pairing unexpected foods at your party will make your party stand out from the crowd, and it will add an extra element of fun when people get to try to new things.

Eating Healthy Is the Key to Happiness

The importance of health has been ingrained in our minds since time immemorial; so much so that we are often reminded of the phrase that if health is lost then everything is lost. It is a challenging task to remain hundred percent healthy nowadays thanks to inorganic food, polluted drinking water, smog filled air that we are breathing and last but not the least, lifestyle disorder. It is important to have a balance diet and regular exercise. Keep checking your BMI and make sure that it is under control. Obesity leads to a number of disorders and diseases so try to cut down on carbohydrates and avoid junk food as much as you can.
Healthy eating should start as early as an infant. Babies should be fed only mother’s milk because that is the only and most nutritious thing that a baby survives on during the first few months. When the baby is breastfed, the mother should maintain a diet specifically focusing on iron and zinc rich food. Calcium is also needed to give strength to the bones because a new mother has to do a lot of running around. Malt based food, which is mainly extracted from barley, is a highly nutritious substance. Aqueous extracts of barley malt, called “wort” contain all the essential vitamins in the B family (niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, thiamin, nicotinic acid, Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), biotin, and folic acid); plus amino acids and protein, minerals, (such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and zinc), and soluble fiber (glucans). Malted Food beverages like Choco Malt, Malto Vitaa, Champion, Choco Vita, etc are excellent sources for a healthy life.

Once the baby becomes 5 to 6 months old, the weaning process will take place. The mother will gradually replace or add other sources of food with breast milk. Usually mothers feed formula or mashed banana and sometimes mashed rice with boiled lentils. It is prudent to give the baby a specially prepared weaning food, mixed with fruits, vegetables and various pulses. In other words, kit should be a judicious mix of Protein – easy to digest and helps in rapid growth, Carbohydrates – acts as energy booster, Vitamin, Calcium and Phosphorus for strong teeth and bones, Iron and Zinc for rich blood formation. Such type of weaning food is very good for nurturing the health and growth of the baby.

These days, the supermarkets are filled with processed foods. Before buying anything off the shelf, do check the labels – if there are more than 6 ingredients, most likely it is a processed food. Please avoid them because you should thrive towards eating wholesome food that has no other ingredients but themselves. It is very difficult to change food habits once our taste buds develop a fondness for a particular food item. So the trick is to develop taste for healthy food. Consuming sugar in the form of ice cream or sweets is alright once in a while but not always. Instead you can replace them with natural sugar available in dates, grapes, homemade honey, maple syrup, etc.

Organic Fruits: A Better Choice for Health of Your Family and Yourself!

When you go for fruits, it is always better that you choose to go for organic fruits. An organic fruit tastes better. It is free from preservatives and also good for the environment. Moreover, organic fruits are free from GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms).

Let’s consider an instance. If you go for papaya, it is better to go for a papaya which is grown organically.

Why Go For Organic Papaya Over Normal Papaya?

Papayas are high in vitamins A and C, good for the skin and good for the immunity. These are full of enzymes that aid the digestion process.

By consuming papayas, one can reduce bloating. Papayas are high in calcium.

Use papaya to make a smoothie, put some over oatmeal or make a fruit salsa using papaya. The tropical taste and flavors will get you!

But there is a checklist you must keep in mind. You must try and make sure that your papaya is not genetically modified. To get the best out of your papaya, you must make sure that it is free from GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms).

Let’s know more about GMOs.

GMOs are produced in a lab. This is done by taking the gene of one species and putting it into another. This allows a scientist to get the desired traits in the new specie.

Why Does One Need To Avoid GMOs?

It is recommendable to avoid GMOs because one wouldn’t know how they are produced. It may be possible that GMOs are made by using virus or bacteria to infect a new species with some other specie’s DNA.

So it is difficult to assume the effect GMOs would have on our bodies.

Apart from papayas, some of the most genetically modified foods are:

  • Cottonseed
  • Canola Oil
  • Sugar beets
  • Corn
  • Soy
  • Zucchini

A simple way to make sure that papayas that you buy are free from GMOs is by looking for the non GMO verified label on papaya. This is also one of the reasons one must choose organic papaya over a normal papaya.

Is It Right to Drink Bottled Water?

People use the water fountain instead of using bottled water

Drinking bottled water has become a part of our mobile life. Where ever we go, we have to consume it, but do you know the health impact of the liquid what we consume bottled. Many of the research scholars have questioned the prevalence of this sealed packaged bottled water. It has also been seen in elite countries especially in the USA, people offer water fountain instead of offering bottled water.

Avoid bottled liquid as much as you can

People will rarely tend to avoid drinking bottled liquid because the other sources such as ground water are saline and that of tap do not bear hygienic quality, and it is not feasible to use RO everywhere. Besides seeing difficulties in accessibility to the fresh hygienic water experts and researchers are suggesting to avoid the consumptions of this bottled liquid as much as possible.

The quality of bottled liquid is under the scanner

Many companies’ quotes, they are presenting water directly from the fresh natural sources to our location in pristine form. But how much that liquid remains pristine is under the scanner. Many other companies say they purify the ground water and convert them to a hygienic form using UV rays and other technologies. The wrong practices of mafias have been seen on camera several times at several places. These mafias have duplicates of all the water brands. So the quality of the liquid bottled in plastic cane has always been under the scanner.

BPA molecules are very harmful

The BPA molecules present in the plastic bottle can be easily mixed with the contained liquid and toxicates that liquid. Drinking that can easily create health setbacks. In case the temperature of the surroundings increases the BPA molecules become mobile and the probability of toxicating the liquid inside increases.

Use of plastic bottles increase carbon footprints

Many companies used to advocates, they use bio-degradable plastic, but it has been studied in the university of California, that out of seven plastic bottles six are not degraded right. In addition to manufacturing these plastic bottles, we have to use trees. So domestication of plastic bottles will not only create health issues for us but it will also export extra burden on neighbours and the future generations to come.

What could be the relevant alternate?

The practice of natural purifier at every door step could be a right alternative but it is really not so easy to be plotted. Carrying water in copper or steel container can also be a wise choice. Can we not imagine the premium quality drinking water supply at every corner? Jal Board needs to root out illegal practices from every level and proper accountability with transparency need to be established to win the trust of users and supply the premium quality liquid.

Use of reusable premium quality steel or copper coated bottle by water companies can also be the best alternative.

When you get physical-when working out, running or playing sports-all that sweating causes you to lose lots of nutrients and minerals. Your muscles lose protein as well, since they are broken down. A quick pick-me-upper would be a sports drink. It replenishes lost fluids and provides potassium, sodium, and other minerals. But despite their benefits, there are drawbacks.

Since sports drinks are not created equal, there are some with an exorbitant amount of sugar, sodium and certain acids harmful to the enamel of your teeth. There’s also other chemicals like coloring. When your body is deprived of so many things, when you drink or eat something it’s easily absorbed. And you don’t want your body being filled up with unhealthy things when it’s supposed to be effectively recovering. Luckily, you can see the ingredients in the nutritional label, so you can make an informed choice.

Thanks the advantage of these commercial drinks, there are so many options in the market. But if you want an alternative, you’ll be surprised that a banana can be enough.

A banana can reduce the risk of muscle cramps because of its potassium content. Its natural sugar content gives your body the carbohydrate content it needs to replenish itself after an intense physical activity.

Now, of course, you have to address the fact that after all that activity you are thirsty and a banana won’t replenish all that thirst. Well, that’s true. So you’re in for a treat. You can make your own shake starring the mighty banana. Just take one medium banana, some crushed ice and a glass or chocolate milk. Yes, you heard it correct, chocolate milk.

The trick here is to provide your body with a carbohydrate to protein ratio or 4:1. This way, your body can replenish the lost energy supply in the form of carbohydrates, at the same time you can feed your muscles with protein so they can recover effectively. There’s also the nutrients from the banana, calcium and other minerals from the chocolate milk. And of course, it tastes awesome. If you’re worried about calories, choose a low-calorie, low-sugar chocolate milk. But do remember that your body will have a high metabolic rate after your workout, so it can easily burn some calories.

Whether you choose sports drinks or a banana protein shake, it’s good that you have viable choices.

Ways Drinking Changes Brain Circuits

Many individuals treat alcohol as a solution to their life’s problems. When consuming alcohol becomes problematic and hijacks the brain, it leads to alcohol use disorder (AUD). AUD is a chronic relapsing brain disease that is accompanied by persistent alcohol use, loss of control over alcohol intake and a negative emotional state on withdrawal from alcohol.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), about 16 million individuals are living with AUD in the United States. Drinking puts considerable stress on the society through myriad ways, such as the economic burden of treating alcohol-related problems, underage drinking, alcohol-related accidents and deaths. It not only affects the individual who drinks alcohol but also his or her family who has to deal with this alcoholism.

Three stages of AUD

To reduce the public health burden and drive medical advancements in the field of treating alcohol-related issues, a continual process of research is required. Understanding the mechanism by which alcohol affects people is crucial for developing new means and tools to arrest alcohol abuse over large demographic regions in an effective way. At this point, the onset of AUD is best described through a three-stage cycle as given below:

    • Binge or intoxication stage: This stage shows how drinking affects the key regions of the brain, specifically the nucleus accumbens and striatum located in the basal ganglia. The nucleus accumbens is associated with experiencing the pleasurable effects of alcohol. When this brain region is activated over and over again, it builds habits that complement the development of compulsive alcohol use and the development of relapse triggers. It also develops a phenomenon known as incentive salience that depicts how people begin to intensely desire alcohol and levitate toward drinking when exposed to alcohol-related cues.
    • Withdrawal or negative effect stage: When an individual develops increased dependency on alcohol, his or her body automatically begins to inhibit the production of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine is largely associated with the reward centers of the brain with special links to neurotransmitters that activate stress and counter stress. During the phase of withdrawal from alcohol, these functions contribute to the development of the overwhelming feeling of unease, anxiety and irritability. This further increases the cravings for alcohol and other substances. The deficit of dopamine, activation of the brain’s stress mechanisms and development of incentive salience drive the motivation to drink and the likelihood of witnessing a relapse when not consuming alcohol.
  • Preoccupation or anticipation stage: In this final stage, the changes in the brain occurs in the prefrontal cortex. It is the brain region responsible for executive functions, such as the ability to systemize thoughts and actions, prioritize tasks, manage time and make decisions. The function of the prefrontal cortex can be divided into a “go” system that controls impulsive behavior and habitual responding and a “no-go” system that inhibits such responses and exercises control over the “go” system. Research has discovered that heightened activities in the “go” system or low activity in the “no-go” system can contribute to binge drinking by regulating the activation of the brain stress systems and inhibiting the response to alcohol-related cues. Furthermore, these mechanisms also control how a person experiences cravings and succumbs to a relapse.

The three-stage model of AUD not only explains how alcohol can take over the brain, but also explains the impact of quitting its habit. The changes in the neurotransmitters and other activities of the brain following alcohol cessation persist for long, even years before the brain naturally stabilizes. Recovery is not a simple task, especially when addiction is so multifaceted in nature in AUD patients. Fortunately, the disorder is treatable in the right medical set-up and individuals diagnosed with it can attain sobriety.
